A Champ Who Feels the Beat
Joe Templin, 19, of Centreville, Virginia, came out swinging at the 2000 Virginia Swing Dance Championships this fall. He and his two dance partners won first place for the Junior Hollywood and the Junior Lindy Hop. But Joe couldn't hear the cheers of the crowd-nor could he hear the music. He is completely deaf. Still, that doesn't stop him from tearing up the dance floor. Joe says he feels the music with his entire body: "I see the beats the way hearing people hear the music."
Joe, who has been swing dancing for only six months, hopes to dance his way to the U.S. Open Swing Dance Championships in California next year: "I want to show people that the deaf can do anything that others can do."
