Hoops Are On Hold!
Pro basketball players--and disappointed fans--just got an extra-long time-out. Last week the National Basketball Association canceled the first 99 games of the season, from November 3 to 16.
For months, players and owners have been arguing over how much players should be paid. Owners want a strict cap on the total amount a team pays in salaries. Last year the cap was supposed to be $26.9 million per team, but exceptions were made for big stars. The Chicago Bulls, for instance, paid $62 million in salaries. More than half ($33 million) went to Michael Jordan!
layers say owners can afford the big bucks. "The NBA is making a lot of money," said New York Knick Patrick Ewing, president of the players' union. "We don't see why they had to lock us out." the Caribbean.
