Spotlight: Anna Markee
There are some awards that nobody wants to win. Take the "Phlegmmy" awards, for example, given out last week in Renton, Washington. Named for phlegm, the icky stuff that can clog the throats and lungs of smokers, the Phlegmmys target movies that make smokers look cool. This year's "Worst Picture" winner was Small Soldiers. "The characters smoke cigars all through it," says Anna Markee, who presented the award, "and it's for kids!"
Markee, 17, has been working for more than three years to stamp out tobacco use among kids. She helped ban outdoor tobacco advertising in her hometown of Tacoma, Washington, and was named the 1997 Youth Advocate of the Year by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Says Markee: "Smoking is such a waste. It's just dumb."
