Farewell To A Champ With Style
She was the fastest woman in the world. With her long, graceful stride and long, colorful fingernails, Florence Griffith-Joyner brought style and flash to the 1988 Olympic track and field events in Seoul, South Korea. She took home three gold medals. Last week, "Flo-Jo" died at age 38. Doctors were not sure what caused her death.
Griffith-Joyner still holds world records in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. She also wrote children's books, designed uniforms for basketball's Indiana Pacers and served on the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. "She accomplished amazing things on the track as well as off," said Jackie Joyner-Kersee, her sister-in-law and fellow athlete. "Florence was a woman of substance."
