Winner's Circle: Lindsay Davenport
She's 6 feet 2 inches tall, strong and swift. But many tennis fans thought Lindsay Davenport lacked the competitive drive to win big matches. On September 12, she proved them wrong by defeating the defending champion, Switzerland's Martina Hingis, in the U.S. Open. Davenport, 22, from Newport Beach, California, is the first American-born woman to win the U.S. Open in 16 years.
