The Other Winter Olympics
Skier Muffy Davis once dreamed of competing against Picabo Street for an Olympic gold medal. But at 16, Davis was paralyzed from the waist down in a skiing accident.
Now Davis is going for the gold at Nagano, Japan. Really! She is one of 587 disabled athletes from 32 countries who began competing in the Paralympic Games last week. Athletes will try for medals in five sports.
Davis uses a special ski to zip down the slopes. "I just figured I had to find a different way to realize my dream," she says. Another event is ice sledge hockey. The players race around the rink on superfast sleds.
The Paralympics began in 1960. They give disabled athletes their own Olympic glory.
Skier Bobby McMullen doesn't worry about the blizzards that made it tough for Olympians to see on the slopes last month. He is nearly blind. "I can ski in any weather," he says with a laugh. "It doesn't make any difference."
