Hitching A Ride
Lots of birds fly south for the winter. But on a jumbo jet? Last month the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service put a lost White Pelican on a United Airlines flight to Florida. Bad weather had most likely swept him off his path. He had wound up in Chicago, Illinois. Cold weather had damaged his feathers and feet. Now he's re-coop-erating at a Florida bird sanctuary. He can try to rejoin his flock once he fattens up and flies right. Perhaps he should keep a map in his bill, just in case.
