Americans Not Welcome!
Just when it looked as if the U.S. and Iraq were getting along a little better, things turned ugly again. Last week Iraq refused to allow a United Nations team to inspect Iraqi weapons sites. Iraq's chief complaint: there were too many Americans on the team. Iraq even said the American leader of the team, William Scott Ritter, was a spy.
After losing the 1991 Persian Gulf War, Iraq promised to destroy its weapons of "mass destruction." The inspectors' job is to make sure Iraq keeps its word.
The American-led team had been trying to find out whether Iraqis had tested illegal chemical and biological weapons on prisoners. Iraq called the accusation a "sheer lie."
