Nagano Gets Ready
The stadiums are built, the athletes chosen, and snow is glistening on the mountains. The streets of the Japanese city of Nagano (Nah-ga-no) are bustling with tourists. On February 7, just two weeks from now, the 1998 Olympic Winter Games will start. Only once before have the Winter Games been held in Asia (Sapporo, Japan, in 1972). They have never been held in a city as far south as Nagano. About 3,000 athletes from around the world will compete in events from snowboarding and women's hockey--both new to the Olympics--to traditional figure skating. Here's a preview of Nagano's sights. Let the Games begin!
