Ice Frost the Northeast
Just as scientists announced that 1997 was the warmest year on record, 1998 got off to an icy start for some folks last week.
Although other parts of the U.S. were warmer than usual, freezing rain and winds whipped through Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, northern New York and Canada. The storms left millions of homes without power. Eastern Canada, including the city of Montreal, was hit hardest.
A state of emergency was declared in Canada's capital, Ottawa. The shining ice that coated trees and power lines was beautiful but dangerous. "The streets here look like bombs hit them, with trees lying all over the place," said Marjorie Northrup of Montreal.
