Spotlight: Erica Rose
Power swimmer Erica Rose of Cleveland, Ohio, doesn't like crowds. "I wanted to get away from them," Erica, 15, said of the pack of swimmers that surrounded her at the start of her first big international race last week. So she broke away from the crowd and never let the pack catch up!
Erica's parents and younger brother watched as she won her first gold medal in the open ocean off Perth, Australia. She finished the five-kilometer (about three miles) race in less than an hour. Erica started swimming when she was 7. She trains four hours a day and hopes someday to swim 21 miles across the English Channel between England and France. "I like the challenge," the champ says. "Unlike most people, I also like the practicing."
