Spotlight: Avi
Which author has one name, two Newbery Honors and seven new short stories for kids? If you guessed Avi (Ah-vee), you must be one of thousands of fans who gobble up his vivid, realistic books about capable, thoughtful kids. "A girl wrote to me, 'Please write a sequel to The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. I've read it 16 times, and my mother won't let me read it anymore!'" says the Boulder, Colorado, author.
His new book of stories, What Do Fish Have to Do with Anything? (Candlewick Press), was harder to write than a long book that tells a single story. The less space there is to tell a story, he says, the more each word counts: "Short stories have to be perfect. You read each one all in one gulp."
