What Makes Luis Run?
Runners came from all over the world to sweat their way through the New York City Marathon last Sunday. But Luís Jorge Obando Ramirez probably outsweated them all. He had been running since June 5. He ran almost the whole 5,000 miles from his hometown of Bogotá, Colombia, in South America, to New York City. Talk about a warm-up run!
Obando faced steep hills in Colombia, man-eating mosquitoes in Panama and nasty run-ins with snakes. "I kept going for my family," he says.
Obando, 46, who was a bullfighter in his youth, recently lost his job and his house. He hoped his supermarathon run would help raise some money and satisfy a lifelong wish.
"I wanted to fulfill my dream to live the fiesta of the New York marathon."
