A Salute To Servicewomen

Throughout our nation's history, nearly 2 million women have served in the armed forces. Last week a monument to their brave work opened in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

Thousands helped dedicate the Women in Military Service for America Memorial. Vice President Al Gore thanked servicewomen for their "countless acts of bravery and sacrifice."

Many of the veterans at the ceremonies said the honor was long overdue for women veterans. When Frieda Hardin joined the Navy in 1918, women were not yet allowed to vote. "In my 101 years of living, I have observed many wonderful achievements," she said, "but none as important as women taking their rightful place in society."
