Let The Games Begin (In 2004)
Last week the final lap of an exciting Olympic race was run in Switzerland: the bid to be host of the Summer Games in 2004. Five cities were in the finals for this honor: Athens, Greece; Rome, Italy; Stockholm, Sweden; Cape Town, South Africa; and Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Hosting the Olympics is a chance for a city to stand proud, to make money from tourists and athletes and to improve its landscape with new stadiums and parks.
On Friday, the City of Athens finally won over the International Olympic Committee. Athens was host to the first modern Olympics in 1896 and expected to be the same at the 100th-anniversary Games in 1996. Greeks said it was unfair when Atlanta won that bid. Now they are rejoicing and getting ready to spiff up their historic city for the best athletes in the world.
