A National Call For Volunteers

Former General Colin Powell is used to fighting wars. But his latest battle may be his toughest: he is waging a war against poverty and indifference--and he wants you in his army! This week Powell is host to a big three-day meeting in Philadelphia called the Presidents' Summit for America's Future.

As the chairman of the summit, Powell is calling on Americans to take time out of their busy schedules to help people in need. He especially wants help for disadvantaged kids.

All the living U.S. Presidents (Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and George Bush) will be at the meeting. Ronald Reagan will be represented by his wife Nancy. The goal: concrete actions that will help at least 2 million people in the next four years.

For months, Powell has been recruiting individual Americans and large corporations to join the battle. Lots of big companies have promised to help: AT&T has pledged $150 million to connect 110,000 schools to the Internet; Kimberly-Clark will spend $2 million to help build 37 playgrounds; Pfizer will donate $5 million worth of medicine to poor kids. Says Powell: "We have several hundred promises already, and I think that is just the beginning."
