Spotlight: Tiger Woods

Sports fans agree: Tiger Woods is grrrreat! On April 13 he scored a historic victory at the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia. Woods, the son of an African-American father and a Thai mother, became the first person of color to win a major golf match. The game of golf has a long, sad history of excluding people of color. But just as baseball's Jackie Robinson did 50 years ago, Woods broke down racial barriers with style and power. At 21, Woods is the youngest player to win the contest--and he won it with the best score ever! After the match, Woods thanked golf's black "pioneers" and his parents. He welcomes the opportunity to serve as a role model for kids: "(If) they look up to me in a positive light," he says, "I've done my job."
