Arcades: The Next Level

After fastening your seat belt on Vertical Reality, you begin to zap bad guys on surrounding computers. A hit! Your seat zips up a level closer to victory as other players slide down the 30-foot pole.

Vertical Reality is just one of the amazing new games at GameWorks, a huge, high-tech video arcade opening March 15 in Seattle, Washington.

"Playing is about escape, adventure and connecting," says movie director Steven Spielberg, who teamed up with Sega and Universal Studios to create the arcade.

At GameWorks, players can race cars, shoot hoops on giant video screens or play classic arcade games like pinball, PacMan and Asteroids.

GameWorks opens in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Los Angeles, California, later this year. Plans call for 100 sites around the world by 2002.

But don't expect to play for a few quarters. Vertical Reality costs $4 a pop. GameWorks expects players to blast through at least $20 a visit.
