Spotlight: Scooter

The faces of even the sickest children light up when they see this visitor coming. Scooter, a King Charles spaniel, has a job in hospitals visiting young patients. They cuddle him in bed, play and, best of all, have their faces covered in puppy licks. Research has shown that the comfort of a pet can help speed up a patient's recovery.

Scooter is just one of the clever canines that appear in Extraordinary Dogs, a Nature special that airs March 9 on PBS. Also featured are dogs that rescue people buried in avalanches, military dogs, shepherd dogs, dogs that help the handicapped, even a Hollywood star. Director Allison Argo was amazed by these four-legged heroes, but, she notes, "Everyone's dog is extraordinary."
