Spotlight: Louisa May Alcott

Treasures can sink to the bottom of the ocean or lie buried in the ground. But a dusty library shelf was the hiding place for the long-lost first novel of Louisa May Alcott, author of the classic tale Little Women. Professors Daniel Shealy and Joel Myerson stumbled across the slim volume at Harvard University while researching Alcott's life. The work had never been published.

Handwritten in 1849, when Alcott was just 17, The Inheritance follows orphan Edith Adelon through England's countryside. Editor Karen Lotz calls the work "extraordinary" for such a young writer. She fixed just a few things for the book's February 14 arrival in stores. Alcott had one bad habit: "She wasn't fond of punctuation!" says Lotz.
