Spotlight: Desmond Howard
Last summer, as the Green Bay Packers were gearing up for a fairy-tale season, they nearly cut Desmond Howard from the roster. The college star from Michigan had had a disappointing four years in the N.F.L., and he had hurt his hip soon after joining the Packers. But after the Super Bowl, coaches thanked their lucky stars they had held on to this awesome kick returner. Grabbing the ball on a kickoff play, Howard ran 99 yards for a touchdown, setting one of his eight records in the game. He was named Most Valuable Player. Some, including Howard, thought quarterback Brett Favre was a shoo-in to win that title. "Brett is basically my MVP," Howard said. "I was just another strong link in this very, very strong chain."
