Spotlight: Miles Postlethwait
Miles Postlethwait, of Lenexa, Kansas, has spent much of his nine years in hospitals. The fourth-grader has had more than 30 operations to fix problems with his heart and other organs. When he was 6, his mother sewed him a special doll to keep him company in the hospital. The "Shadow Buddy" looks like Miles and even has a row of stitches near its heart. Miles asked his mom to make "Buddies" for other sick kids. Now more than 12,000 U.S. children have "Buddies" with stitches, leg braces or other special equipment to match their own. Miles advised his mom to give the dolls smiles and to "put heart eyes on them so that kids know that they're loved."
