Monaco's Royal Celebration
On a stormy night in 1297, François Grimaldi disguised himself as a monk and sneaked inside the rocky fortress of Monaco. Ever since then, the Grimaldi family has ruled the tiny European country. Last week, on another stormy night, Monaco celebrated 700 years of Grimaldi rule.
With its pink palace, candy-striped flagpoles and cobblestone streets, Monaco looks like a fairy-tale land. In fact, it is a rich country, with little crime and no unemployment. Ruled by Prince Rainier III, Monaco is smaller than 1 square mile, but it is packed with banks and businesses.
Can a tiny land ruled by a royal family last into the next century? Says Rainier: "If there's a world 700 years from now, I am confident the Grimaldis will still be here."
