Speaker in the Doghouse

The new year is off to a rough start for Newt Gingrich. The powerful Georgia Congressman faces a tough battle this week to hold on to his job as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Even if he hangs on, he may face punishment for breaking the rules of the House.

On December 21, Gingrich admitted he did not get good advice from a lawyer before teaching a college class in Georgia. His critics say the class was a political project. Congress has strict rules about members' political activities, and Gingrich did not follow them. He also admits he gave wrong information to the House ethics committee--a group that makes sure members of Congress play by the rules.

The House will vote later this month on Gingrich's punishment. He could lose his job as Speaker, even if he is re-elected to the post this week. No matter how it ends, Gingrich will have lost some respect and power.
