Spotlight: Katherine Paterson
Katherine Paterson has won enough writing awards to fill a shelf. Her books Bridge to Terabithia and Jacob Have I Loved each won a National Book Award and a Newbery Medal, the highest honor for a children's author.
In her dramatic new book, Jip (Lodestar/Dutton), set in the 1800s, a young boy is abandoned near a small Eastern town. The story follows his search for his true identity.
The award winner did not always dream of becoming a writer. "When I was 10, I wanted to be a movie star or a missionary," she says. Somehow, neither job worked out. But now the Barre, Vermont, grandmother proudly calls herself an author. "It's the only job I could hold," she says.
