Pakistan's Bhutto Gets The Boot
At 1 a.m., Tuesday, soldiers surrounded the home of Pakistan's Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. The stunned Bhutto then got a phone call telling her she was fired.
Although Bhutto is Pakistan's leader, the country's President, Farooq Leghari, has the power to dismiss her. He claims Bhutto's government has been dishonest. He wants to hold elections for a new government. Bhutto's husband Asif Ali Zardari, who was the Minister of Investment, was put in jail. Opponents have accused him of stealing millions.
Bhutto's dismissal surprised nearly all of Pakistan. For some it was a cause for celebration. In the city of Karachi, women handed out sweets; men danced in the streets.
For 20 years, Bhutto, 43, has been at the heart of political life. In 1988, she became Pakistan's first female Prime Minister. Two years later, she was accused of corruption and forced from office. In 1993, she was re-elected Prime Minister.
"I don't allow people to kick me out. I fight," she said last week. "I will be Prime Minister again."
