Spotlight: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
When N.B.A. legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was in school, hitting the books was just as important as hitting his free throws. But he was troubled that his textbooks lacked some key players from history: African Americans. Now retired from basketball, he decided to do something about history books' missing chapters. His new book, Black Profiles in Courage, tells the stories of these forgotten inventors, explorers and patriots. "It's tough to find heroes these days," Abdul-Jabbar told TFK. "Kids often focus on defiant rebels or misfits. That's what sells." Says he to kids from all backgrounds: "Take a closer look at these courageous African Americans. They could have been you. You could have been them."
