Clinton's Monumental Move
The red-rock canyons of southern Utah hide many riches. A trillion dollars' worth of coal lies buried beneath them. But hikers adore the steep, pinkish peaks. For years, a battle has raged over their fate.
Last week President Clinton made an important move in the battle. He added 1.7 million acres of the land to an existing national monument. That makes Grand Staircase-Escalante America's largest monument.
Environmentalists are thrilled with Clinton's move. But miners and local leaders may sue to reverse the decision. They believe the coal is valuable to the U.S. and could improve Utah's economy.
Said Clinton at the historic signing: "We must measure progress in protecting frontiers for our children."
