America invented the national park in 1872, when Western explorers asked Congress to create Yellowstone National Park. No one imagined then how popular these parks would become. Last year more than 269 million people visited our 369 national parks! Here's how many stopped by the most popular parks:
1. Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee: 9 million
2. Grand Canyon in Arizona: 4.5 million
3. Yosemite in California: 3.9 million
4. Olympic in Washington: 3.9 million
5. Yellowstone in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming: 3.1 million
