President Clinton Hits The Road

An Emperor, a Prime Minister, two Presidents and two sumo wrestlers were just some of the people President Clinton met last week. The President's one-week trip took him to South Korea, Japan and Russia. But world security and U.S. trade relations--not sightseeing--were at the top of the President's schedule.

In South Korea, President Clinton met with President Kim Young Sam. The two leaders proposed peace talks between South Korea and its enemy, North Korea.

Peace was a hot topic in Japan as well. Said President Clinton: "As two of the world's strongest democracies and leading economies, Japan and the U.S. have a special responsibility to lead." The U.S. vowed to keep 100,000 soldiers in the area. Japan agreed to play a bigger role in preventing conflicts in Asia.

After leaving Japan, President Clinton flew to Russia. There the President traded strategy with another President who is facing a tough re-election campaign--Boris Yeltsin.
