World Leaders Take On Terrorism
In Egypt last week 29 world leaders sent a message to terrorist groups: Don't mess with us!
A string of deadly terrorist bombings shocked Israel in the past month. Presidents, Kings and Prime Ministers gathered to condemn those terrible attacks. They promised to work harder to stop terrorist groups from recruiting members, raising money or buying weapons.
"They will never kill peace," Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat said of the terrorists.
Among the nations represented were 13 Arab states. Arab nations have a long history of conflict with Israel. But Arab leaders came to speak out against violence on both sides of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
"Every type of violence against innocent people will in turn generate more violence," said Saud al-Faisal, Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia.
Leaders of two Arab nations, Syria and Lebanon, refused to attend. But other Arab leaders listened intently as Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres welcomed them to the meeting. "Yesterday's enemies are gathered here today as partners in the battle for a different tomorrow," Peres said. "It will be a new Middle East."
