A Primary Surprise

New Hampshire voters gave Bob Dole a shock last week. For months Dole has been the front runner among Republican presidential candidates. But last week the Senator from Kansas lost the New Hampshire primary to Pat Buchanan, who has never been elected to political office.

"I won the first election of my whole life!" Buchanan shouted the day after the primary. Buchanan worked for Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

The race was very close. Buchanan won 28% of the votes, Dole took 27%, Lamar Alexander won 23%, and Steve Forbes got 12%.

Buchanan is campaigning against Big Business and Big Government. He says he will "stand up for working men and women whose jobs are threatened." That idea is popular with many voters.

Dole blamed his loss on the mudslinging tone of political ads in New Hampshire. With six months to go before the Republican Convention, Dole may still come out on top. But he is bound to be bothered by one fact: for 44 years, no Republican has won the White House without first winning in New Hampshire.
