Spotlight: Brooke Bennett
At 5-feet 4-inches, U.S. champion freestyle swimmer Brooke Bennett, 15, is a lot smaller than most swimmers. But size hasn't stopped Bennett from becoming a giant in her sport. At the U.S. championships this month, she placed first in the 400-, 800- and 1,500-meter freestyle races--using short, fast strokes to beat taller opponents. Now Bennett hopes she can glide past the competition at the Olympic trials, which begin March 6 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Bennett's grandfather, who swam laps with former Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz, put her in a pool before she was a year old. Now he's hoping she'll be the big fish at the Summer Olympics.
