A Historic Election
On January 20, Palestinians made history. For the first time, they were able to elect their own leaders. Their new President? Not much of a surprise. It is Yasser Arafat, who has led Palestinians for decades.
The election shows that Palestinians want to create a democratic government in the territory they recently won from Israel. It was Arafat who helped make the deal with Israel, promising peace in exchange for the land (see TFK, 10/6/95).
"I am very proud of this historic democratic election," said Arafat after his victory. His dream is to gain more land from Israel and create an independent nation for his people.
