Will The U.S. Have A New Neighbor
What if the United States split into two separate nations? It might have happened--if the South had won the Civil War. Now Canada is facing a possible split-up. This week the people of Quebec, a province more than twice the size of Texas, are voting on whether to separate and form their own country. The vote has the rest of Canada very worried.
Most of the province's 7 million people speak French, so Quebeckers have wanted their own French-speaking nation for years. Because of Quebec's land and natural resources, many say it could be a strong nation.
But more than 80% of Canadians disagree. They believe a divided Canada would do less business with other countries, so Canadians might lose their jobs. Last Friday over 100,000 people rallied in Montreal, hoping to prevent a breakup.
How did Quebec vote? The results should be available on October 31.
