Look What's Up Now, Doc?
When it comes to business, who's bigger--Bugs Bunny or Mickey Mouse? For the past two months it's been Mickey. The Walt Disney Company, empire of Mickey, The Lion King and many other movies, became the biggest media company in the world on July 31. That's when Disney announced that it was buying Capital Cities/ABC, owner of ABC Television, newspapers and cable channels. The combined company would earn about $16.5 billion a year.
But guess what's up, Doc! Bugs' bosses at Time Warner just made a deal that will make them even bigger than Disney. Time Warner, which owns Looney Tunes, HBO and, yes, TIME For Kids, announced that it is buying the Turner Broadcasting System. TBS owns the Cartoon Network, CNN and movie studios. Experts say the new company will earn around $18.7 billion a year.
Is bigger better? The bosses at the world's biggest phone company, AT&T, don't think so. Last week they decided to break up the business into three smaller, more manageable parts.
That's all, folks!
