Underwater Bombshell
Most countries oppose the testing of nuclear weapons. But that didn't stop France from exploding a nuclear bomb last week, deep underground. The explosion, half a mile below Mururoa in the Pacific Ocean, was the first of several the French will use to make sure their weapons work.
The French say volcanic rock will trap the bombs' deadly radiation. But world leaders and environmentalists say the tests are unsafe and unnecessary. Island residents in the testing area fear the radiation will leak.
Some protesters rioted in Tahiti, 750 miles from the test. They destroyed part of an airport and set fires. Rioters battled police and soldiers.
French President Jacques Chirac says the tests will end when all the information is collected. But opponents want France to stop now.
