California's Weather Woes

When it rains, it pours! From February 17 to 23, Southern California got more rain than it could absorb. The rain broke local records in Los Angeles, where rainfall totaled 9.14 inches. That's only six inches less than the city usually gets in an entire year!

Though the sun finally came out, the damage from the supersize storm will be long-lasting. Cleanup is both expensive and exhausting. Firefighters worked overtime responding to calls for help. Nine people died in weather-related accidents.

Mudslides on hills caused some houses to collapse. Many people were forced to leave their homes.

Others felt forced to stay inside. Stephanie Soechtig, a Californian, said, "We've been stuck inside. I feel like I'm going crazy."
