David Bauer once thought he would never use lessons from chemistry class in the real world. But those lessons helped him invent something that could one day save lives. David, 17, developed a sensor that can quickly detect harmful gases in the air. On March 15, his invention won first place at the Intel Science Talent Search, a contest for high school seniors. He received a $100,000 scholarship and plans to attend college in New York City this fall. Until then, David will keep putting chemistry to good use. "My professor is busy cooking up ideas," he told TFK.
