The First Lady Goes Abroad

Last Wednesday, First Lady Laura Bush paid a six-hour visit to Afghanistan. The focus of her trip was to support Afghan women's struggle for greater political rights and educational opportunities.

During her trip, Mrs. Bush made several stops in and around Kabul, the capital. At Kabul University, she told students, teachers and business leaders that a free society "depends on the participation of all its citizens, both men and women."

The First Lady went on to meet with the president of the fragile democracy, Hamid Karzai (hah-mid car-zie). He said that Mrs. Bush's visit "matters much more than hundreds of millions of dollars" in aid.

Before heading home, the First Lady ate dinner with U.S. soldiers at Bagram Air Base. She told the troops that "millions of Americans are thinking of you."
