A Record-Setting Trek

What a cool journey! On March 21, British explorer Tom Avery and his team set out for the North Pole. Last Tuesday, the five explorers reached the Pole--and their goal: to make the trip in 37 days or less.

The team was following a trek made by the U.S. explorer Robert E. Peary in 1909. Peary claimed to have reached the Pole in 37 days. Some people doubt the claim. No one since had reached the North Pole so quickly. The closest anyone got to his time was 43 days.

Avery traveled with wooden sleds similar to Peary's. Avery's team beat the 37-day record by several hours. Upon reaching the North Pole, Avery called Peary a great explorer. "Hopefully, our re-creation of his journey will silence anyone who doubted this," he said.
