Just Call Him Toadzilla!

FrogWatch, an Australian environmental group, is out to get cane toads. Last week, group members captured a 15-inch-long toad as heavy as a small dog. It is among the largest ever found in Australia. "It's huge," says FrogWatch's Graeme Sawyer. "The biggest toads are usually female. I would hate to meet his big sister."

Cane toads, native to Central and South America, were introduced to Australia in 1935. Farmers hoped the toads would feast on cane beetles, which were destroying the sugarcane crop.

But the cane toads are bad neighbors. They have poisoned millions of native animals, including snakes and small crocodiles. Scientists fear that cane toads will cause even more problems if their Australian population continues to grow.
