The Top Lawyer Steps Down

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has been one of President George W. Bush's most loyal advisers. But the fellow Texan called it quits on August 27. As head of the Justice Department, Gonzales was the top law-enforcement officer in the country. When Bush appointed him in 2005, he praised his friend as a hardworking son of poor Mexican immigrants. Gonzales was the first Hispanic to be Attorney General.

Recently, critics had demanded that Gonzales resign. They said he allowed several U.S. federal prosecutors to be fired for political reasons. Gonzales said that the prosecutors were dismissed because they weren't doing their jobs well.

"I have lived the American Dream," said Gonzales. "Even my worst days as Attorney General have been better than my father's best days."
