Children's author Madeleine L'Engle died on September 6 at age 88. L'Engle's famed novel A Wrinkle in Time was published in 1962. The manuscript had been rejected by 26 publishers. The novel went on to win the coveted Newbery Medal in 1963. About 8 million copies have been sold. L'Engle wrote more than 60 books, but Wrinkle remains her masterwork.
Fellow Newbery winner Lois Lowry wrote to L'Engle after discovering that both had lost a son. She shared her thoughts with TFK last week: "I wrote her a letter. Both of us had shared many stories with the world, but this was a personal and private loss, and one that we shared with each other. When she replied, she concluded her letter with the word 'Blessings.' What better farewell is there? Blessings to you, Madeleine L'Engle."
