The Nation Honors a Hero

The Medal of Honor, which was established by Congress in 1862, recognizes gallantry above and beyond the call of duty. On June 28, 2005, Lieutenant Michael Murphy was a shining example of this quality as he fought in Afghanistan. On October 22, President George W. Bush honored Murphy for his heroism at a medal ceremony in the White House.

Murphy, 29, a Navy Seal, died in combat. He exposed himself to enemy fire in order to call for help for his unit. "Deep in the mountains of Afghanistan, this brave officer gave his life in defense of his fellow Navy SEALs," said Bush.

The President presented the medal to Murphy's parents, Dan and Maureen Murphy.
