The President Visits Africa

President George W. Bush traveled to Africa last week on what he called a "mission of mercy." During his five-country tour, the President met with African leaders and promised continued commitment to the continent. Under Bush's leadership, the U.S. has given Africa billions of dollars in aid. Among other things, the funds have helped to fight disease and improve education.

During his stop in Rwanda, in central Africa, Bush visited a memorial to a terribly violent time in the nation's history. He called on world leaders to stop current conflicts in other regions of Africa.

The President also hoped to draw attention to African nations that enjoy stability and peace. In Tanzania, he praised its leader's efforts to fight corruption. And in Ghana, he hailed the democratic nation's peacekeeping efforts within the continent.
