A Loss for Pakistan's President

Two main opposition parties swept to victory in Pakistan's general elections on February 18. The vote was a major rejection of the government of President Pervez Musharraf. The parties of slain former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and another former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, won more than half of the 268 open seats in parliament.

Last Tuesday, Sharif called for his country's President to step down. "Musharraf has said he would go when the people want him to," Sharif said. "The people have given their verdict."

But Musharraf says he's not going anywhere and will work with the new government "for the good of the country."

"This is not the election for President," said Musharraf's spokesman.
