Powerful storms pounded the nation's midsection last week, dumping as much as 10 inches of rain on several states. Floods washed out roads and highways. High winds caused airlines to cancel more than 700 flights around the country.
At least 13 people had died in storm-related incidents in Missouri and Kentucky by last Thursday. Missouri resident Scott Peterson watched the water rise three feet in five minutes. He barely had time to get the family's dog out of the house. "You didn't have time to worry," said Peterson. "You just grab what you can and go." Nearly 300 homes and businesses in the state were flooded.
At week's end, rescue crews continued to search for missing people in Missouri, Texas and Arkansas. Ohio and Indiana braced for more flooding.
