A Food Crisis Sweeps the Globe

Poor nations around the globe rely on the World Food Program (WFP) for assistance in times of food shortages. Now, the United Nations agency needs the world's help.

On April 22, WFP head Josette Sheeran warned that food shortages and soaring prices may cause more than 100 million people to go hungry. The WFP is calling for $500 million in emergency aid.

The food crisis has sparked angry protests worldwide. There are many factors contributing to the shortages and price spikes, such as high oil prices and natural disasters.

Some countries, including the U.S., have pledged funds. But the agency will still have to reduce aid to many areas. The crisis "is affecting more people on every continent," says Sheeran.
