Last week, walls at the Pentagon and the World Trade Center crumbled to the ground. Such destruction, though, did not crush the spirit of the people of America. Heroism was on display throughout the country. Here's a look at some of the people who performed selfless acts of courage and kindness from sea to shining sea:
Call for Help
Thomas Burnett Jr., 38, told his wife to report the hijacking to authorities. Investigators think Burnett and other passengers may have stopped the plane from hitting its intended targetthe White House or Camp David, the President's retreat. Instead, Flight 93 crashed into a Pennsylvania field. There were no survivors.
Gift of Life
People across the U.S. waited hours to donate blood for victims of the World Trade Center and Pentagon disasters.
Little Helpers
Kate Ludwig, Chris Rios and 40 other kids in Dallas, Texas, helped victims by collecting donations for the American Red Cross.
New York's Bravest
New York City's 13,000 firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish fires at the World Trade Center and save lives. Sadly, at least 300 firefighters were lost when the buildings collapsed.
